David Steinhart
Los Angeles songwriter David Steinhart continues to build on his prolific career with his latest solo album titled, “Released”. This is his first solo recording since 2001, having made 9 albums over the past 12 years with his acoustic Folk trio, The Furious Seasons. The new album, featuring ten new songs, highlights his ongoing love of folk-tinged pop this time with a lush full band, arrangements, and rich lyrical imagery, Produced by acclaimed, five-time Grammy winner Alfonso Rodenas and performed by a group of talented musicians, Steinhart has crafted an album that nods to the great pop records of Todd Rundgren, Harry Nilsson, Prefab Sprout and Elvis Costello. Steinhart’s voice navigates these songs of love and loss with a crooner’s velvety touch. The accompaniment is bathed in the warm tones and skilled playing of Paul Nelson on guitar, brother Jeff Steinhart on bass, William Gramling on keys, and Edoardo Tancredi on drums.
Jack Rabid of The Big Takeover describes Steinhart's musical style as “soft, finely crafted, windswept pop,” commenting that Steinhart sings and writes, “warm, literate, sober, preoccupied folk-pop, always well-crafted, and full of small, conspicuous, workmanlike extras and an aptitude for unpretentious, poppy hooks.”
These 10 songs sparkle with sophistication, pathos, and wit. On the opening track “It’s Just Not Setup That Way” Steinhart lays out his feelings about the hope of seeing a loved one in the afterlife; all the beauty/all the loss/all the churches/all the mosques/all the writings/all the ways that we pray/I won’t see you again/I’m sure of it/it’s just not setup that way.
And on “The Curve in the Bar” he laments seeing glimpses of an old friend that he knows isn’t really there; it’s my mind playing tricks/ it’s safe to assume when I see your face/ in some dimly lit room/or in the rearview/ of a fast-moving car/or on a tall stool /at the curve in the bar
With nearly 30 albums to his name as a solo artist and with the bands The Furious Seasons, Smart Brown Handbag, and Pop Art, Steinhart's extensive discography showcases his commitment to the craft. His enduring influence makes his work a compelling exploration for fans of well-crafted and thoughtful music. “Released” is a testament to his continued evolution as an artist.
